OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

We are deeply committed to protecting the environment for generations to come. And we believe by preserving tuna fish stocks we can play our part in creating a sustainable future.

Here at Dinko Seafoods, we are proud to have led the way in sustainable fishing methods. It is because of our commitment to sustainability that we have developed innovative solutions that have shaped an entire industry. Today, the Australian Southern Bluefin Tuna fisheries are one of the most sustainable on the planet.

Leading the way in sustainable fishing methods

We have been at the forefront of the development of a sustainable fishery in Australia.

In 1984, the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT) cut tuna fishing quotas and income by two thirds to help the sustainability of the species.

In response, Dinko Lukin threw the industry a lifeline when he hatched the ground-breaking idea of farming this fast swimming ocean fish. We implemented the harvest of wild Bluefin Tuna as they pass through the cold, clean waters of South Australia during the summer beginning in December.

The fish are then slowly towed back to Port Lincoln where they are ranched (farmed) until they reach optimal size. This method increases the fishermen’s quota as the limit on their catch is determined by the weight of the fish caught in the wild, with any weight gained in captivity a bonus.

Dinko Lukin’s solution not only helped the regeneration of Southern Bluefin Tuna in the wild but is now the internationally accepted method for Bluefin Tuna farming. The Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT) has confirmed that the latest data indicates strong recovery of the wild population of Southern Bluefin Tuna and it is now a sustainable fishery, with stocks growing yearly.

Sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do

Every day, our focus remains on innovation and sustainability… in every sector of our operation. We use sustainable farming methods to harvest our catch. That’s why we choose to feed our Bluefin Tuna on a diet of premium, sustainable MSC certified South Australian sardines.

We own and manage our own fishing vessels and processing factory, exporting premium sustainably caught Southern Bluefin Tuna, Australian Sardines and Western King Prawns.

Our fisheries are managed by the State and Commonwealth Governments through strict quota programs to ensure sustainability of the industry. They regularly conduct water quality audits and assess the local marine ecosystems in the region to guarantee its clean, green reputation.

We are also proud to be part of the ‘Adopt a Beach’ program to monitor, cleanup and minimise the impact of debris on the Spencer Gulf coastline.

Accreditations

Dinko Seafood is proud to be accredited by the following associations:

Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)

The MSC mission is to end overfishing and restore fish stocks for future generations – something we are very passionate about here at Dinko Seafoods.

We are proud to display the blue MSC label on our products to show that we meet international fishery standards for fish stocks, minimising our environmental impact and effect management.

MSC accreditation is recognised worldwide as the gold standard to aspire to.

Friend of the Sea

Dinko Seafoods is accredited by Friend of the Sea, the only sustainable fisheries certification program recognised and supervised globally by a national accreditation body.

Several benchmarks have confirmed the strength and reliability of the Friend of the Sea certification and chain of custody.

Yearly audits are carried out onsite by independent international certification bodies in consultation with stakeholders, against the strict Friend of the Sea environmental sustainability and social accountability criteria.

Dolphin Safe

Dinko Seafoods is one of very few Australian seafood suppliers who have membership to the Earth Island Institute Dolphin Safe Tuna program.

Since the program was launched in 1990 dolphin deaths in tuna nets have reduced by 99%. And we are proud to be part of driving that change in keeping dolphins safe in the tuna farming process.

As a member of the Dolphin Safe program, our equipment, procedures and policies are assessed annually by the Earth Island Institute.
