Expert hunters of the ocean

Southern Bluefin Tuna (also known as SBT) are expert hunters of the ocean. They are fast and agile swimmers, making their flesh a lean and healthy protein source.

They are always on the move and can eat up to a quarter of their body weight in a single day. This opportunistic feeding results in layers of fat throughout their muscles. For you, that gives them added flavour when they end up on your dinner plate.

During summer, the SBT undertake their annual migration across the Great Southern Ocean, to the nutrient-rich upwellings of the Great Australian Bight. This is the part of the world we call home and where we farm and harvest these kings of the ocean.

Sustainably farmed Bluefin Tuna

Overfishing can have significant impacts on the health of our oceans and sea life. We care deeply about creating a sustainable future for all. That’s why we are focused on preserving fish stocks and meeting strict quotas set by the government.

More than 30 years ago we developed an innovative tuna farming method known as Catch and Ranch to help protect the fish stock.

The method focuses on increasing the weight of captured tuna during captivity rather than taking more fish from our oceans.

We feed our Bluefin Tuna on a diet of premium, sustainable, MSC certified South Australian sardines.  Our tuna are fed on fresh sardines within hours of capture. The rich natural diet helps our catch to grow in size, maximising the quality of their flesh.

When we harvest the Bluefin Tuna, we use the Japanese technique known as ‘iki jime’ (brain spiked) to humanely euthanise the tuna within ten seconds. This method minimises the stress and maximises the quality of the fish.
